Hi,
the easiest way to add a photo is to use a simple Text Widget.

First; Upload a image or photo in your Media Libary. You can do this in any post or on any page. 

If you´ve done this, open this image in your libary an copy the full path of your image. (Normaly to find under "Link URL")

Now you can use the Text Widget to show this image.

You only have to add one line of code like;

<img src="here_the_complete_image_path" alt="any_title" />
You also can "style" the image with CSS (Border, Align Space and so on).

Otherwise you will find many Galery-Plugins in the WP Plugin Directory, which have a own sidebar widget.
